Are you inclined to call a handyman whenever something breaks at home? After all, it’s so easy and convenient to pick up the phone and call a professional when something goes wrong. But convenience comes at a cost, unnecessarily so where common repairs are concerned. However, with a little knowledge and determination, you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself.
Cracked Molding
Cracked molding may look like a intricate operation requiring a high degree of specialized knowledge. In truth, all it really takes is some epoxy filler or wood putty, a putty knife, and some sandpaper (putty is usually sufficient for smaller cracks or dents). Fill the damaged spot using your putty knife. Don’t worry about using a little too much, as it can easily be sanded down to match the molding once it dries. If you’re using a water-based wood filler such as Timbermate, simply use your finger to smooth it over. Once you’ve got it level with the molding, simply paint the repaired area to match your existing shade. It’s really that simple!
Drywall Damage
If you’re a homeowner, you’re probably used to all kinds of drywall damage. Don’t sweat it, as this one’s a pretty easy fix as well. You’ll need a drywall patch you can cut to the size of the hole, then screw it into place applying screws about every six inches. Apply drywall compound and drywall tape, smoothing the tape with a knife and squeezing out enough of the compound so that it doesn’t leave a bump on the wall. Apply two more coats of compound, making sure your taped joints are smoothed out (check for uneven spots after each coat). Once it’s dry, a little sanding, priming, and painting will leave the spot looking good as new again.
Fresh Filters
It’s always a good idea to keep your HVAC unit happy and healthy with some preventative maintenance that can save you a bundle in the long run. One very good way to do that is to change the filter on a regular basis (every month is generally considered a good idea). If you’re into convenience, there are companies that will ship new filters wherever you live in the continental U.S., free of charge. Drawer Handles
Drawer handles can break fairly easily, whether from contact with a large, heavy object or by carrying a piece of furniture by the handle. You’ve got a couple options to help you fix them. You can spend a lot of time trying to Crazy Glue it back together, or you can spend a few bucks on a replacement handle. Just unscrew the inside of the faceplate to release the broken piece so you can match it to the correct size and style. Simply line up the holes on the back of your replacement handle with those on the front of the drawer and screw it into place, making sure it’s securely attached (it shouldn’t move once it’s screwed into place).
A Leaky Pipe
A leaky bathroom pipe is extremely aggravating. However, resist the impulse to call a plumber to address the problem — it’s probably just a loose nut or worn down washer. Shut off the water before you begin to avoid what could be a very wet and unpleasant experience. Place a large bucket under the offending pipe, then unscrew the compression nuts. Replace the washer and, if necessary, the P trap, screw it back into place and you’re set. (Don’t forget to make sure the leak’s gone once you turn the water back on.)
Owning a home is a costly undertaking. Anything you can do to save a buck here and there will add up, so approach those DIY household repair jobs with gusto. Any time you fix a leak or patch a wall yourself, think of it as an investment in next summer’s vacation or a few more dollars toward a safe, reliable car for your child.
